Turn the Sentra's ignition off and remove the key. Open the car's hood. Locate the post on the battery labeled with a "Minus" symbol. This is the negative battery cable.
- 2
Turn the nut on the negative battery cable counterclockwise with pliers. This loosens the cable. Lift the cable off the battery post to disconnect it.
- 3
Find the camshaft position sensor on the back half of the valve cover. It's right behind the Sentra's oil cap. You'll see an electrical plug and a single bolt.
- 4
Press down on the electrical plug's tab. Pull it back to unplug it from the sensor. Use your pliers to remove the camshaft position sensor's bolt.
- 5
Grasp the camshaft position sensor and pull it out. Insert the new camshaft position sensor into its place. Line up the bolt hole on the sensor with the bolt hole on the back half of the valve cover to ensure it's aligned.
- 6
Insert and tighten the bolt. Plug in the electrical plug. It's not necessary to push the tab when connecting it; it should snap into place with ease. Place the battery cable back onto the negative battery post. Tighten the nut.

How to Change the Camshaft Position Sensor in a 2000 Nissan Sentra
The 2000 Nissan Sentra's camshaft position sensor is an electrical component that monitors the cam speed. This helps to regulate fuel delivery and ensures that your Sentra runs efficiently. The camshaft position sensor is commonly referred to as a CPS. If it's faulty, your Sentra may run rough and your dash may display a "Check Engine" warning. Fortunately, the camshaft position sensor is easily accessible in the engine compartment. Replacing it is not a tough job.
