Turn on your Xbox 360 and sign into your Xbox Live profile. Navigate to the "My Xbox" menu and click on your profile. Click "Edit profile" and select "Gamertag" from the list of options.

Click "Continue." Enter a new gamertag in the provided text box and click "Done." If you enter a gamertag someone else on Xbox Live already uses, a box will appear and ask you to choose from a list of others that are close to that name. If you do not want to choose from the provided list, press "B" on your controller to enter a new name.

Click "Confirm" to confirm your gamertag for the price of 800 Microsoft Points. The points will automatically be deducted from your balance. Select "Add Microsoft Points" if you do not have the 800 points available. You can purchase the points using your credit card information that is saved or by entering a new credit card or prepaid card.

Insert the "Modern Warfare 2" disc into the disc drive of your Xbox 360. The game will automatically begin. Click "Multiplayer" on the game's main menu. Your online "Modern Warfare 2" name will now reflect your new gamertag.
PC

Visit the Steam website (see Resources). Enter your username and password to the left of the page and click "Sign in."

Click "Steam Community Settings." Select "Edit My Steam ID."

Enter your new Steam ID in the provided text box and click "Continue."

Insert the "Modern Warfare 2" disc into your computer. Click "Play Modern Warfare 2" if the game does not automatically begin. Click "Multiplayer" and join a match. Your new name will reflect your new Steam ID.
