How to Change Oil on a Class E Mercedes

Motor oil is an essential lubricant used in internal combustion engines to minimize the extreme friction and heat created when the engine is running. Car manufacturers recommend regular oil changes, because under these conditions motor oil eventually loses its viscosity and will wear out. Fortunately, changing the oil in your Mercedes E-class is a task that you can complete yourself.

  Warm the engine to its normal operating temperature. Turn off the engine. Raise the car at the front end using an automobile jack. Place jack stands under the jacking points behind the front wheels. Chock the rear wheels.

  Remove six bolts from the under-engine protection plate with an 8-mm socket and wrench. Remove the plate.

  Place an oil drain container under the oil pan. Remove the oil drain plug with a 13-mm socket and wrench. Remove the copper gasket from the drain plug; a new one is supplied with the new filter. Under the hood, release pressure to the oil system by removing the oil filler cap. Allow the oil drain completely.

  Unscrew the oil filter cover by hand and lift the filter element out of the housing. Remove the old filter and four "O" rings from the element. Install the four new "O" rings and filter supplied in the oil filter kit as described in the manufacturer's instructions. Replace the new filter into the housing and turn the cover clockwise to tighten.

  Install the new copper drain plug gasket and replace the drain plug with a socket wrench. Add new oil into the oil filler tube under the hood to the recommended level. Replace the oil filler cap.

  Start the engine and check for leaks at the oil filter and drain plug. Turn off the engine and replace the under-engine protection plate. Lower the car to the ground. Check the oil level with the dipstick.
