Prop the front of the truck up on a pair of front jack stands and wait for the engine to cool down. Slide underneath the engine and locate the transmission drain pan in the center of the engine, just off to the driver's side. This is a large, metal box surrounded by eight bolts. Place the collection pan beneath the transmission drain pan.

Remove seven of the eight bolts with the 1/2-inch socket wrench. Wait for the fluid to stop running over the sides of the drain pan (this generally takes about 10 to 15 minutes). Hold the drain pan steady with one hand and remove the final bolt. Pour the remaining fluid into the collection pan. Wash off the bolts and the drain pan.

Remove the old transmission fluid filter located below the drain pan using the socket wrench. Replace it with the new filter. Reattach the drain pan. Lower the car from the jack stands.

Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the transmission dipstick between the battery and the air intake. Remove the dipstick and place a funnel in the tube. Pour in four quarts of transmission fluid. Replace the dipstick and close the hood of the S-10.

How to Change the Transmission Fluid on an S-10
The Chevy S-10 pickup truck requires an oil change every 30,000 miles or two years, depending on whichever one comes first. If the truck is used frequently for towing or in stop-and-go traffic, then a change becomes necessary every 15,000 miles. Changing the transmission fluid maintains the lubrication in the engine and keeps the gears from grinding during shifting. If left unchanged, serious engine damage can occur. A transmission fluid change in the S-10 requires only a few tools and about an hour's work.
