How to Check a Memory Upgrade

Do it yourself projects are usually much cheaper than paying a professional, and the same applies to computer upgrades and repairs. Upgrading a computer's memory is a task that many computer users know how to tackle, but you have to make sure you install the memory correctly. Windows displays the amount of memory currently installed on your computer, so you can easily verify that you've installed your memory upgrade correctly.

Open the Windows Start menu by clicking on the "Start" button in the lower right corner of your desktop.

    • 2

Right-click "Computer" and then click "Properties."

Locate the details listed for "Installed Memory (RAM)" under the "System" heading to verify how much memory is installed on your computer. For example, if 4.00 GB of RAM is installed, your computer should report "4.00 GB." If the memory displayed here does not match the memory you actually installed in your computer, then the memory stick upgrade is either faulty or not installed correctly.
