Pull weeds in a section of lawn measuring approximately 16 feet by 10 feet. Level the area with a rake.

Apply 220 lbs. coirpith to the cleared space. Level it with a rake.

Sprinkle 10 1/2 oz. Pleurotus spawn onto the coirpith.

Apply a second layer of 220 lbs. coirpith over the Pleurotus spawn.

Sprinkle 2 1/4 lbs. urea over the second coirpith layer.

Continue layering coirpith, Pleurotus spawn, coirpith then urea until the pile measures 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall.

Apply water to the coirpith heap as necessary to keep it moist. The pile should decompose for 30 to 40 days before use in place of peat.

How to Compost Coirpith
Coir pith is an acceptable subsitute for peat in your gardening endeavors. Coir pith is the short fiber content left after long fibers are removed from coconut, according to David Hensley and Julie Yogi from the University of Hawaii at Manoa's department of horticulture. Coir pith benefits include improvement of soil's water infiltration rate and addition of both macronutrients and micronutrients to the soil, advises Kerala Agricultural University.
