How to Confirm IRS Payments

The Internal Revenue Service offers several different methods for you to make payments. When using technology to make your payment, obtaining payment confirmation is easy. Making payments using traditional methods, such as a check, money order or cashier's check, is also easy. However, with the traditional methods, you have to take extra steps to confirm that the IRS has received your payment.

Make your payment through an approved ePay service provider. This can be done over the phone or through the ePay service provider's website. To submit payment to a provider, you must use a credit or debit card. When you make your payment, you will receive a confirmation number at the end of the transaction. This confirmation number confirms the submission of your payment. A list of approved ePay service providers can be found on the IRS website, IRS.gov.

Look at your bank or credit card statement if you paid with a bank debit or credit card. The IRS transaction will show up on your bank or credit card statement as "United States Treasury Tax Payment."

Send your IRS payment via certified mail. By doing so, you receive proof from the U.S. Postal Service that your payment has been successfully delivered to the IRS. This does not confirm that your payment has been processed. It only confirms delivery.
