Connect one end of the crossover cable to the network port on one of the computers. Connect the other end to the network port on the other computer.

Click the "Start" button on one of the computers. Click "Control Panel" in the Start menu. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center."

Click "Unidentified Network" if the connection between the two computers is the only network you have running. If you have a wireless connection setup, click "Mulitple Networks."

Click the link that reads "Network discovery and files sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Click to change..." Click "Turn on network discovery and files sharing" in the box that appears. You may need to enter an administrator password if you are not logged in as the administrator.

Choose to make the network either private or public by clicking the appropriate link in the dialog box that appears. Choosing the first option affects only the network between the two computers. The second option affects all networks you currently have set up on your computer.

How to Connect Crossovers
Using a crossover cable to connect two computers together eliminates the need to set up a network or ad hoc connection. Crossover cables look similar to Ethernet cables and both cables plug into the network port of the computer or laptop, but crossover cables reverse the wires inside the cable. They are usually yellow, whereas Ethernet cables are usually gray.
