How to Curve Brick Around a Mailbox

Mailboxes are commonly held up by posts made of wood. These posts are forced to withstand immense abuse caused by lawn mowers, animals and other small pests that like to dig and attack these structures. Protecting the mailbox posts by curving brick around the base is an outstanding way to prolong the life of the mailbox post, allowing you to continue to use a mailbox for several years.

Divide brick lengths into 4-inch sections. This is done by marking the direct center of each 2- by 4- by 8-inch brick with a pencil.

    • 2

Cut along each center mark using a wet saw to divide the bricks into smaller 2- by 4- by 4-inch sections. This will allow you to form the brick around the posts more easily.

    • 3

Level the ground by digging approximately 2 to 3 inches into the ground around the post. This will allow you to create a stable brick structure around the post.

Mix the mortar mix in a large bucket. Follow package directions carefully to produce a strong, quick drying product.

    • 5

Apply a base layer of mortar directly onto the ground surface. Apply a 1-inch thick layer on the ground.

    • 6

Set your first layer of bricks around the mailbox post by pressing gently into the mortar mix layer. Leave a 1/4- to 1/2-inch gap between each brick installed. Pour on additional mortar and smooth into the cracks using a trowel.

Apply a 1/2-inch layer of mortar mix on top of the previously installed brick layer. Offset the next layer by placing the first brick in the center of the brick below. This layer will include bricks that are supported by two brick halves immediately below.

Pour on additional mortar mix and smooth into the cracks using a trowel.

Repeat steps 6 through 8 until bricks are stacked 12 inches high.

Wipe away excess mortar from the top and sides of the bricks using a wet sponge.
