How to Cut an Opening in Concrete Block

If you need to run a pipe or other object through a concrete block wall, you must first cut a hole in it to accommodate the object. You want to keep the hole as small as possible to allow for a sufficient seal around the penetrating object. Although cutting through concrete can look daunting, the average homeowner can take on this task with a few common home remodeling tools.
    • 1

Mark out the opening you wish to cut on the block wall. Draw the outline on both sides of the block wall.

    • 2

Drill a hole through the wall at each corner of the marked-out hole with a masonry bit. Verify that the marked outline lines up on the other side of the wall.

    • 3

Cut along the marked outline with your circular saw. Do this on both sides of the wall.

    • 4

Bust out the concrete with a hammer. Use a chisel to clean up the edges of the hole as needed.
