How to Design a Flow Chart for Currency Conversions

Flow charts, in general, illustrate the different steps involved in a process using symbols and shapes that mean specific things like actions, decisions or starting and stopping. Designing a flow chart that provides a process to convert currencies will involve getting the first amount and currency name while providing a mathematical equation for each currency choice. Make your flow chart using pen and paper, the symbols found in word processing applications or with the use of special flow chart software.

Grab a sheet of clean paper or open your software application to a new file. Draw or insert an oval shape at the top-left side of the paper and write "Start" inside the oval. Insert a directional arrow in a straight line directly below the bottom of the oval pointing downward.

    • 2

Draw a rectangle shape directly below the arrow so that it touches the arrow. Write inside the rectangle, "Get current currency." Draw another downward directional arrow from the bottom of the rectangle.

    • 3

Insert or draw another rectangle at the bottom of that directional arrow. Write inside the rectangle, "Choose currency to convert to." Draw an arrow straight down from the bottom of the rectangle.

    • 4

Draw a diamond underneath that arrow. Inside the diamond, write "Convert to Currency = Current Currency?" Draw arrows coming out from the left and right ends of the diamond.

    • 5

Write "Yes" over the arrow coming from the left of the diamond and the word "No" over the arrow coming from the right. Draw rectangles on the ends of both the right and left arrows.

    • 6

Write inside the rectangle to the left of the "Yes" arrow, "Display error message: You have entered an invalid currency to convert to. Please choose again." Inside the rectangle to the right of the "No" arrow, write "Perform Calculation."

    • 7

Insert another downward directional arrow from the bottom of the "Perform Calculation" rectangle. Draw another rectangle at the bottom of that arrow that says "Display Result" on the inside of it.

    • 8

Draw a final downward arrow that points to a final oval shape. Inside the last oval, write "End."
