How to Dress a Child With a Larger Waistline

Overweight children are often the butt of cruel jokes and name-calling about their sizes. Incessant name-calling and teasing can make a child feel uncomfortable and affect their self esteem. Dressing your child in flattering and fashionable clothes can help to boost their confidence. Try to incorporate these tips when purchasing clothes for your overweight child.
  • Dressing Plus-Sized Girls

Ensure that clothes are not too tight nor too big. Clothing that is baggy will make her look like a tent. Clothing that is too tight will call attention to larger areas. In addition to giving a better appearance, appropriate-sized clothing will feel more comfortable and less restrictive.

Purchase clothing items that have flattering cuts. Choose clothes that will create an age-appropriate shape for your daughter's figure.

    • 3

Find flattering colors and patterns. Although dark colors absorb light and appear to be slimming, they should be avoided when shopping for young girls, since dark colors have a tendency to age them. Girls clothing should be bright and fun with bold colors and patterns.

    Dressing Husky Boys

Choose clothing with diagonal stripes as they tend to camouflage unflattering parts and create a taller, slimmer silhouette.

    • 2

Ensure T-shirts are not excessively baggy. Boys tend to wear looser fitting clothing than girls, but it is important to make sure the T-shirts are not too baggy on boys as they have the tendency to flare out, making them look larger.

Purchase bottoms that fit properly in the waist and that are the correct length. Make sure that the bottoms do not squeeze his belly.
