How to e-File Form 4868
Form 4868 is used when you need an extension to file your federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service. You are able to receive an extension automatically if you pay all or part of your estimated taxes due, but if you cannot do so by the tax return deadline, Form 4868 allows you to apply for an extension without payment. However, interest and penalties accrue on your unpaid taxes until your return is filed.
