How to Empty a Hot Water Tank

If you need to remove sediment or mineral deposits that prevent your water tank from heating the water properly or if you simply need to fix the wiring of the tank, you must first drain the tank. A new water tank can involve a serious expense, so you should investigate the possibility of repairing a water tank before purchasing a replacement. Whether you are going to attempt to troubleshoot the water heater or are hiring a professional, the tank must be emptied before work can begin.

Turn off the hot water heater's water supply.

    • 2

Turn off the hot water heater's power supply at the circuit breaker or fuse box if electricity heats the water. If you have a gas heater, turn off the water heater's gas at the main gas supply line.

    • 3

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve. You'll find the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater. Run the hose's other end into the floor drain.

    • 4

Turn on a hot water faucet in the house so that air can replace the draining water.

    • 5

Open the drain valve and allow the water to run out of the hose. If sediment starts to clog the hose as the water level lowers, add more cold water to the tank to move the sediment around and allow it to drain out properly.

Ensure that the hot water heater has completely drained before you open it to make any repairs.
