How to File a Missouri Income Tax Return for Free

In accordance with Missouri law, those who live or work in Missouri must file a Missouri tax return for the previous year by April 15. Some people use tax preparation software to file their state returns, while others pay tax accountants to do them. However, if you feel comfortable doing your taxes and they are not too complicated, you can print and file your Missouri tax returns for free.

Go to the individual income tax section of the Missouri Department of Revenue's website.

Click on "Tax Form Selector" to select the tax forms that you will need. If you live in another state but work in Missouri, you must complete the MO-1040, the MO-NRI (the non-resident form) and any other necessary forms.

Print and complete the forms. Although the forms vary, most forms ask standard demographic questions, such as name and age, questions about income and questions about liabilities and assets. Typically, you need 1099s and W-2 forms to complete such forms. File your Missouri tax returns during or after filing the federal returns since you can use information from the federal returns to complete the state returns.
