How to Hang a Large Unframed Mirror

Hanging a large mirror involves more than just placing it on the wall. The weight of the mirror must be taken into account to determine the best method to prevent breakage. The selection of screws, mirror clamps and the location of the studs are important considerations in ensuring the mirror is stable. There is also an aesthetic decision involved. The premium placement spot for the mirror should consider ways to bring in sunshine, improve a view or emphasize your fireplace.

Examine your room. Look for dark corners you want to highlight or a view you want to enhance. Select this spot for your mirror.

Measure your mirror and cut its size from a piece of paper. Tape this paper to the wall for several days to decide if you like the placement.

    • 3

Determine the number of clamps you need based on the size and weight of the mirror. Space the clamps every 4 feet or less. Add one more clamp to all sides of the mirror for each additional 50 lbs.

Place your stud finder on the wall beside your paper. Move it sideways across the wall, along the bottom of the paper, until it beeps. Mark the spot with an "X" underneath the paper on the wall. Follow the paper to locate and mark additional studs on the wall. Repeat the procedure along the top of the paper. Measure 4 feet from the top of the paper on both sides. Write an "X."

Remove the paper. Place the clamp over the bottom "X." Insert the screw into the clamp. Finish inserting the screws into all of the "X" spots.

Slide the side and top clamps open. Expand them as far as they will go. Slide the mirror into the bottom clamps. Adjust the top and side clamps to finish hanging the mirror.
