How to Heat a Metal Rod

Metal is a malleable element. You can shape or modify the material easily using a wide variety of tools. Plasma cutters quickly slice through most any type of metal. Diamond tipped blades readily cut through most of the same. Often, the hardest thing to do with metal is to curve or shape metal rods and tubes without sacrificing the integrity or shape of the surface. The only option for manipulating metal rods without damaging or destroying them is carefully applied heat.

Set the propane torch to propel a long flame with as high heat as possible. Play with the output until the flame is as blue as you can get it while still maintaining a long flame. Short, tight flames will cut through most metal.

Secure the metal rod to a surface using metal clamps. A carpenter's vice is ideal, as it can grasp the metal rod without your burning the surface.

Apply the torch to the area you desire to manipulate. Move the flame over the surface without focusing on one individual point for too long. Apply the heat for 2 to 3 minutes, at most. You can also set the rod inside of a fire pit with burning coals for 10 to 15 minutes to achieve the same effect.

Manipulate the rod as desired, using slow but firm force.

Reapply heat as necessary until you reach your desired shape. Allow to air cool.
