How to Lock a DSL Connection

A digital subscriber line, commonly known as DSL, is a type of broadband Internet connection in which the user connects his computer to a regular phone line using special hardware. This hardware translates the signal over a broadband Internet connection that is enabled on the user's PC. With a wireless router, a user can broadcast DSL connections wirelessly throughout a home or office for use by any computer with a wireless receiver set to the correct settings. You may want to lock your DSL connection so that only users who have physical access to the settings and password will be able to connect to it.

Ensure that your wireless DSL connection is installed correctly and that your hardware is properly connected and running as it should. Check that all the cables are plugged in to the correct ports. In addition, check the front of your router and cable modem to verify that the indicator LEDs are lit and displaying properly.

Determine your wireless router's IP address. This information is typically found in the user manual for your wireless router. If you no longer have the user manual, do an online search for one. Most router manufacturers provide downloadable user manuals on their websites.

Type the IP address of your wireless router into your Web browser and press "Enter." This will open the login screen allowing you to configure the settings on your wireless router.

Log in to your wireless router's control panel. If you have never set up this screen, you may need to create a username and password at this time. The router's manufacturer may have preset this username and password, so check the user manual for this information if you don't have it.

Lock your DSL wireless connection. Click on the "Security" tab or option in the wireless administration panel and follow the on-screen instructions to turn WEP encryption on. You may be provided with a randomly generated security key. Write this key down. If you choose WPA encryption, you may be able to set your own key or password. Save your settings and close your browser. Your DSL connection is now locked to anyone who does not have the password or encryption key you set up.
