- 1
Position yourself so that you are not standing under power lines when working with an extension pole. Hold the lower section of the pole securely.
- 2
Grasp the lock ring at the end of the lower section and turn to loosen. Pull the smaller section of pole from inside the lower pole to the desired length.
- 3
Tighten the locking ring by turning it in the opposite direction used to loosen. Hold the lower section firmly and tightly lock the ring.
- 4
Raise the locking extension pole, slowly making sure not to contact any power lines. Raise the saw, roller or other device at the end of the pole to the desired working level.
- 5
Lower the pole, if necessary, and make any adjustments to the overall length to achieve a comfortable working height.

How to Lock a Telescoping Pole
From limb pruning to painting and hanging outdoor decorations, telescoping extension poles are used to provide a convenient means of gaining more reach when working. Typically featuring one or more sections that nest inside each other, telescoping poles allow for a wide range of adjustment lengths up to the maximum designed length of the pole with all sections extended. A locking ring is commonly used to secure each section in place.
