How to Make Black & White Vintage Digital Pics

Nowadays you can easily manipulate your pictures to make them appear as though they were taken a hundred years ago. With a few clicks of the mouse you can turn your photos black and white, and even make them appear sun-worn, or faded. One of the most popular photo editing programs is Photoshop, although there are also freeware programs such as Photoscape or Pixia.

Open your the image in Photoshop. Go to "Image," "Mode" and "Grayscale" to make your picture black and white. Then click "Image," "Adjustments" and "Brightness/Contrast." Add textures and sepia tones to give your pictures an aged look by going to "Image," "Adjustments" and "Color Balance." Adjust the color balance to the yellow side to give your photo an age-worn look.

Launch Photoscape, if you decide to use this program, and open the image. Under the "Home" tab, click "Filter" button, then "Antique Photo." Select one of the effects (no color conversion, grayscale or sepia) to give your image an antiqued look, then click "OK."

Go to "File," then "Open" to open your image in Pixia. To desaturate your image, click on "Color Balance," and adjust the "Vividness" slider by dragging it to the left, then click "OK." Add a new layer by clicking the "Edit" button under the "Layers" palette, then clicking "Add." Add a sepia tone by choosing a brown sepia tone color from the "Color Mixer" palette, then hitting the "Fill" button. Finally, click on the sepia tone layer and open the "Layer Options" dialog box. Set the "Layer Mode" to "Hue and Saturation," then press "OK." Your image should now take on a more vintage look.
