How to Make Your Own POIs for a Garmin GPS

Garmin sells all sorts of personal travel assistants to consumers who want to find easier ways to get where they need to go. Garmin personal travel assistants are designed to help you navigate public roads while driving your vehicle. To make using your Garmin GPS device easier, you can use the POI, or point of interest, function. To create your own POIs, use the "Favorites" feature of the Garmin GPS device. You can also use the POI Loader on the Garmin website.
  • Adding a Favorite POI

      Enter an address of the POI you wish to save as a "Favorite." Touch "Where to" and then touch "Address" to enter the city, state and street address if the new POI.

      Touch "Save" from the "Go!" screen. This will save the POI to your "Favorites."

      Type in a name for your new POI, such as the name of the business.

    POI Loader Software

      Visit the Garmin "POI Loader" page to download free software that helps you create your own POIs. Click "Download POI Loader" and select the download option for your operating system.

      Enter the address for the POI you wish to add to your Garmin in the POI Loader program. You need to enter the city, state and street address, as well as a name for the POI.

      Connect the Garmin to your computer using the USB cord that was provided with the device. Select the POI you added to the program and choose the option to add it to your Garmin. This will automatically add it to the POI list on your device.
