- 1
Plug the OBD II code scanner into the diagnostic port located on the underside of the driver's side dash near the steering column.
- 2
Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position, taking care not to start the engine. This will power on most scanners. If not, find the on/off button and turn it on.
- 3
Wait for the code scanner to interface with the Dodge's computer. It will automatically display the alphanumeric trouble codes when it has finished reading the computer. Write these codes down on a piece of paper. Look up their meanings in the scanner's manual.
- 4
Turn off the scanner, if necessary, and unplug it from the port. Turn off the vehicle. Take the vehicle to your mechanic to have repairs or servicing completed based on the information provided by the codes.

How to Pull Codes on a 2002 Dodge Diesel
You can pull the codes from your '02 Dodge Diesel right from your home garage. Trouble codes are generated by sensors positioned throughout the vehicle when they detect a malfunction. These codes are sent to the OBD II computer (On-Board Diagnostics II), which stores them for your retrieval. When this computer detects a trouble code, it will alert you to the situation by illuminating a warning or service light on the instrument panel. You need to purchase or borrow an OBD II code scanner to pull the codes.
