Pull the bottom end of the handle open with your fingers to access the battery cartridge. Grasp the cartridge with your fingers and pull it out of the drill.
- 2
Rotate the chuck counterclockwise with your hands to open the jaws fully. Look inside the center of the chuck to see the screw securing it to the spindle. Turn the screw clockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screw has left-hand threads which makes removal and installation the reverse of normal screws.
- 3
Insert the short end of a 1/2-inch Allen wrench into the chuck and tighten the chuck around the wrench. Tighten the chuck jaws securely around the wrench with the chuck key just as you would if installing a drill bit.
- 4
Lay the drill on a raised flat surface on it's right side with the drill chuck hanging over the edge of the surface. Hold the drill with one hand and strike the Allen wrench sharply with a hammer to turn the chuck counterclockwise.
- 5
Turn the chuck counterclockwise by hand using the Allen wrench as a handle once you get the chuck to turn using the hammer. Unthread the chuck completely from the drill. Loosen the jaws of the chuck with the chuck key and pull the Allen wrench out of the chuck.

How to Remove a Chuck on a Makita 6093D Drill
Replacing chucks on drills is necessary if the chuck no longer holds drill bits securely or you need access to the inner workings of the spindle mechanism. The Makita 6093D drill uses a chuck that threads onto the drill spindle. Removing a chuck on a Makita 6093D requires removing the small set screw in the center of the drill chuck opening, much like any other drill. The chuck secures to the drill tightly which requires some force to remove it from the drill.
