How to Remove a CV Half Shaft on a 2000 Mazda 626

The CV half shaft -- also known as the drive axle -- connects the transmission to the front wheels. The axle has a joint at each end, allowing the torque to be evenly distributed to both wheels even as it travels over bumpy terrain. The most common problem with the 2000 Mazda 626's CV half shaft is a torn dust boot, which can be found on each joint. When this occurs, grease from the joint escapes, meaning it loses lubrication and soon stops functioning.

Park your car in a safe location and make sure it is secured in place.

    • 2

Raise the front wheels using a floor jack and support the car using jack stands under the front sub-frame.

    • 3

Take the front wheels off the car.

    • 4

Remove the castellated space and large cotter pin on the axle, using a pair of wire cutters and the front axle nut. These can be found in the middle of the front hub and brake rotor.

Locate the 15 mm pinch bolt that fastens the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and remove it.

    • 6

Pop the ball joint stud out of the steering knuckle by prying the lower control arm down.

    • 7

Tug the steering knuckle to give you the leeway to remove the axle from the front hub.

    • 8

Position yourself underneath the car and place the pry bar between the transmission case and the inner joint of the axle. Pry the axle from the transmission and then pull it out of the car, past the brake system and through the fender well.
