How to Remove Wax Buildup on Laminate Floors

Laminate floors feature the look of expensive hardwood or stone flooring. However, because laminate flooring is patterned from wood or stone, it is less expensive than the real thing. Even with the cheaper price tag, laminate flooring will last a lifetime with proper care. One way to keep your laminate floors looking their best is to remove the wax buildup. Waxy buildup will cause your laminate flooring to appear dull and dingy with a yellowish tint. You can remove the wax buildup with a few common household items.
    • 1

Remove the dirt, dust and other surface debris from the laminate floor using a broom. Sweep the debris into a dustpan and discard in the nearest trashcan.

    • 2

Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 1-gallon of hot water. Pour 1 cup of ammonia and 1/2 cup of powdered laundry detergent into the bucket. Use a spoon to mix the items.

    • 3

Submerge a mop into the mixture. Place the mop on the floor and apply pressure so the mixture flows out of the mop. Repeat this step several times until you have flooded a small section of the flooring.

    • 4

Scrub the flooring vigorously with the mop. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you have removed the wax buildup from the small section. The wax buildup is removed when the yellowish tint is no longer visible on the flooring.

    • 5

Move to another small section of the laminate flooring. Repeat Steps 3, 4, and 5 until you have removed the all the wax from the flooring.

    • 6

Discard the contents of the bucket. Rinse the bucket and the mop clean with cool running water. Fill the bucket with cool water.

    • 7

Saturate the clean mop in the water and wring out the excess liquid. Rinse the laminate flooring with the mop. Wipe the floor clean with several towels.
