How to Reset the HDD Password on a Gateway M460

The M460 is a model of laptop computer manufactured by Gateway Incorporated, a California-based subsidiary of Acer Inc. The hard disk drive on the M460 is equipped with a password to prevent unauthorized access to your data should the computer be lost or stolen. The password cannot be reset without sending the computer to Gateway for service. You should try the following troubleshooting steps before contacting Gateway. Allow 5 minutes for this task.

Make sure both "Caps Lock" and "Num Lock" are not enabled when entering your password. If either modes are active, a padlock-shaped LED will light up below the mouse pad. Press the "Caps Lock" or "Num Lock" key to disable the mode. Retype your password.

Make sure you are not misspelling your password. Try passwords you have used in other situations. Passwords can be a combination of numbers and letters. Perhaps you included some numbers for extra security.

Contact Gateway Customer Care (see Resources). Without access to the password, you will not be able to access your hard disk drive yourself. Gateway will be able to reset your password and retain your data.
