How to String Beads With Thread

You can string almost anything on a piece of thread, as long as it has a hole. This includes new beads, old beads from broken or unused jewelry and even vintage buttons. Once you start to string, you'll see new life in these objects and create wearable art for yourself or others.

To make sure that your piece stays together and gives you a long time to enjoy it, pay special attention to starting and ending your jewelry piece. Don't be afraid to tie a strong knot and then tie a second to help the first.

Secure one end of the thread by slipping it through a bead tip designed for this purpose and tying a knot. This will prevent the beads from slipping off and give you a way to close the piece of jewelry when you want to wear it.

Slip enough beads onto the thread to create the jewelry piece you want. For example, string at least 16 inches of beads for a necklace or 7- to 7½-inches for a bracelet.

End the piece by tying a knot through another bead tip or, if you used a bead as a toggle clasp, create a loop to fit snuggly over that bead yet can still slip off. Tie a finishing knot.

Glue the knots for extra security.
