Using the seam-ripper, remove the seam from the cuff of the slacks. Be cautious not to poke holes or tear the material when removing the original seam from the slacks. Unfold the hem for each leg and let them hang loosely.
- 2
Put the slacks on and pin where you would like the length to be. Once the slacks are pinned, you should move around to ensure that the length is correct. Try on a pair of shoes with the slacks; this will show you where the length is at when you are fully dressed. Double check the length in a full-sized mirror to verify that the length looks appropriate.
- 3
Measure each leg of the slacks to ensure that the hem line will be even; measuring each leg will allow you to be certain that the measurements are accurate and proportional. When you are satisfied with the length, iron the slacks where the pins are placed. If you are unsure about ironing the fabric, check the label to see what the directions for care are; these should tell you if the slacks can be ironed and at what temperature. If there is no description, use a small damp towel placed between the iron and the fabric.

Using the needle and thread, form a loose stitch where you would like for the new seam to be. Once you have placed the loose stitching, try the slacks on again and decide if any additional adjustments need to be made. If adjustments are necessary, pull out the stitches and repeat steps 2 through 4 until you have reached the desired results.
- 5
Make the permanent stitches after you have ensured the proper fit; using a tighter stitch will keep the hem from unraveling and complete the alteration process.

How to Tailor Slacks
Finding a decent pair of slacks can be difficult in itself, and finding a fabulous pair that does not fit quite right is frustrating. Professional alterations can be expensive and time-consuming and a small modification like adjusting the length of a pair of slacks can be done at home with a few supplies that you probably already have. Knowing how to make your own minor alterations gives you the freedom to purchase slacks that you may not have considered before.
