How to Test Potato Chip Crispness as a Classroom Activity

Classroom activities offer a chance to inspire and teach children with fun and engaging lessons. The key element is to base the lesson on an element the children enjoy while establishing parameters that guide them to learn something. Potato chips offer an excellent opportunity to capture the children's attention, establish theories, and test those theories. You can test the potato chip's crispness based upon different variables, such as size, shape, and type to accomplish the goals of teaching while allowing the children to have a good time.
    • 1

Set the control for the test. The control will be a basic chip with no extras, such as flavor or ridges.

    • 2

Set the elements to test. Elements will include chips with different shapes, textures and flavors, and of different types. Choose a wide variety of chips, including corn, tortilla and puffed chips. Choose several different flavors of each.

    • 3

Create a printable form for the children to write down the type of chip, the characteristics and the measure of crispness of each chip. Print a copy for each child.

    • 4

Conduct the test. Have each child taste the control chip, and then each subsequent chip, recording their individual findings on the printed form.

    • 5

Share the findings as a class. Have the children conclude what aspects of the chip impacted the crispness, such as flavoring, size, shape and type.
