How to Transfer Outlook to Imail

Outlook is an email facility provided as part of Microsoft's Office software package. It is designed for, and mostly used on, Windows-based computers. Likewise, iMail is Apple's email program designed for use on Apple Mac's. The two programs don't produce compatible inbox types, i.e., they cannot just be transferred across at the click of a button. So a small workaround has to be undertaken to transfer mail from Outlook to iMail.

  Navigate to the Mozilla Firefox page and download and install the Firefox browser with Thunderbird email client.

  Choose to "Import mail from Outlook" when prompted during the install. All of your Outlook mail will now be copied into Thunderbird. If you already have Thunderbird, open it and click "Tools" and then "Import" and select the "Mail" button. Then select "Outlook" and click "OK."

  Click "Start" and then click "Run." Or in Windows Vista or 7 just use the search bar and type in "%APPDATA%". Then click search. (Vista or 7 users will have to click "Roaming" after searching).

  Open the "Thunderbird" folder, then open your profile name and navigate to "XXXXX.default\Mail\Local Folders" where X is a letter or number. Find the "Inbox" file, which will have no suffix and be classed simply as a "File" if you sort the folder under "Type." Slowly double-click the filename and edit the file so it reads "Inbox.mbox" and press "Enter."

  Copy the "Inbox.mbox" file to your Mac using a USB stick or a network and open the file with "Entourage." This will copy the contents of the inbox file into Entourage, allowing you to then drag and drop your mail across into iMail. Alternatively, use iMail's "Import Mail" function.
