How to Troubleshoot Handheld PCs

Most pocket PCs allow you to surf the Internet, upload music and pictures, as well as save contacts and calendar events. As with a regular computer, a pocket PC is prone to technical difficulties that may need to be fixed. Troubleshooting simple problems may allow you to fix your pocket PC without calling a professional or technician, saving your money, along with teaching you new things about your device.

      Turn the pocket PC off. This can reset many issues, including unresponsive programs, screen freezes, or if the pocket PC is running slower than normal.

      Switch USB ports on your computer if your computer isn't recognizing your pocket PC when connected through the syncing cable. Unplug the tether that connects your pocket PC to your laptop from the USB port it is currently residing in. Place the USB part of the tether cord into another USB port. Most computers come with more than one USB port.

      Update the drivers for your Pocket PC. Plug the device into your computer or laptop via the USB or syncing cable. An update driver's message will appear in your toolbar at the bottom left of your desktop. Double-click the icon on the tool bar and select "Update Drivers." Your computer will need to be restarted once finished.

      Update the software for your pocket PC. Contact technical support or visit the pocket PC manufacturer's website to see if any software updates are available. Most updates can be downloaded through the manufacturer's website by looking up the device you own and selecting "New Updates."

      Save or backup all files on your pocket PC onto your computer. You need to do this to completely reset the pocket PC to its original factory settings. Select "Tools" when the active sync menu appears on your pocket PC. Choose "Full Backup" and give your pocket PC time to backup all the files to your desktop or laptop computer. Once the backup is complete, locate the "Reset" button on the back of your device and press the "Power" button at the same time as the "Reset" button. This will reset your device to factory settings.

      Contact technical support for your device if you are still having problems. This is located in the user's manual of your device or on the manufacturer's website.
