How to Use Ideal Telephone Splice Connectors

Splicing is a technique that can be used to reduce the static heard over your phone or as a troubleshooting step used when repairing a damaged phone line. The physical act of splicing telephone wires is relatively simple. If you do not have experience with this type of work, the most difficult part of the activity will be knowing which wires to splice. A telephone line needs to have two wires ("TIP" and "RING"), which are referred to as "one pair." These wiring configurations differ based on the type of cable being used (i.e. Cat5 differs from Cat3).
    • 1

Determine the correct "wire pair" that carries the telephone signal through your home. Most telephone lines run on a red/green pair or the blue/white blue pair.

    • 2

Cut the cable one inch from the end of the wire using wire cutters. Strip the outer protective shield of the cable with wire strippers. The protective shield should be stripped back until the inside wires are exposed. You will want to have an inch to an inch and a half of exposed wire. Repeat this step for both ends of the cable.

    • 3

Use scissors to trim the ends of the wires of the cable back until all of the wires are equal in length. Repeat this step for both ends of the cable.

    • 4

Pull the wire pair you are working with out of the bundle. This will be the red/green pair or blue/white blue pair depending on the type of cable you are working with. Repeat this step for both ends of the cable. Hold the pairs together with your hand.

    • 5

Position and push the splices over each pair on both ends of the cable. If you are working with Cat3, the two red wires go in one splice and the two green wires go into the other splice. If you are working with Cat5, the two blue wires go into one splice and the two blue/white wires go into the other splice.

    • 6

Confirm that the wire pairs are pushed completely into the splice to avoid shorting the line you are working with.

    • 7

Crimp and compress the splices with the pliers. This secures the splices in place.

    • 8

Repeat these steps if you have more than one phone line/phone number to ensure that your phone system is working properly once you have finished.
