How to Use a Light Socket Adapter

Installing a socket adapter in an existing lamp is a simple method of improving the amount of usable light the fixture can produce. These devices come in a wide range of colors, styles and configurations. Most can be purchased at home improvement retailers, hardware stores or electrical supply houses. Best of all, the unit can be installed without using any tools whatsoever.
    • 1

Unplug the lamp from the wall outlet, or switch it off from a wall-mounted light switch.

    • 2

Unscrew the shade finial and remove the shade. You may also want to remove the shade harp as well.

    • 3

Unscrew the existing light bulb from the lamp and set it aside.

    • 4

Install the socket adapter in the existing lamp socket by turning it in a clockwise direction. Screw it all the way down to ensure a good connection, but do not overtighten it.

    • 5

Reinstall the bulb you removed earlier. If your new socket adapter is a two-lamp (bulb) model, install a second light bulb in the other socket.

    • 6

Reinstall the shade harp, shade and finial.

    • 7

Restore power to the lamp and turn it on.
