How to Use Liquid Nails to Attach Luan to Concrete Floors

Luan, also known as Lauan, is a product that consists of a pressed wood sponge center between two thin wood veneer outer pieces. Luan is typically available in 4-by-8-foot sheets that are 1/4-inch thick or thinner. Luan is used on wood toys such as doll houses, hollow interior doors and subflooring for vinyl because of its cheap cost and light weight. Luan is very susceptible to water damage, so make sure there is no moisture seeping through the concrete when using the product on subflooring.

Clean the concrete floor by sweeping and washing it with a mild detergent and a stiff-bristled brush. Fill in any large holes with a concrete patch product. Grind away any areas of concrete that protrude from the surface to create a smooth surface for the luan.

Measure the luan to the desired size and mark it appropriately. Snap out lines with a chalk box to ensure straight cuts. Cut the luan with a circular saw equipped with a wood blade.

Insert the tube of liquid nail into the caulking gun and surround the outside edge of the luan piece with a 1/4-inch bead of the liquid nail glue.

    • 4

Fill the center area of the luan with a 1/4-inch bead of liquid nail, forming a large "x." Making a continuous wavy line or straight lines in the center area will work just as well.

Set the luan into place on the concrete floor. Step on the top of the luan piece to ensure that the glue is spread evenly between the wood and concrete. Use the same process to install all the luan panels. Allow the liquid nails to dry completely.
