How to Use a Round Nose Bit

If you've used a router before, mastering the art of using the round-nosed bit won't be difficult. Round-nosed bits, also known as core box bits, make grooves rounded at the trough and are useful mostly for molding embellishments or making small, round indentations, such as those you might find on a Chinese checkers board.

  Fit the round-nosed bit into your router. Set the plunger to the correct depth for the cut you wish to make.

  Mark out the cut or cuts you intend to make on the wood. Clamp the wood to a work surface so that it won't move while being cut, but watch that the clamp placement doesn't interfere with the router's movement.

  Make the cuts slowly; if necessary, run over the cut a second time to remove debris.
