Purchase a solar pool cover from a home supply store, pool shop or online. Bubble solar covers look like bubble packing material; they use a thick material and have UV inhibitors. Vinyl covers offer more strength and last longer than bubble solar covers. Some vinyl covers have a layer of insulation added to keep more heat in.

Lay a solar pool cover flat over the surface of the pool. For the bubble type, lay the bubble side down. Allow the cover to sit for an entire day to give it time to settle properly.
- 3
Cut the cover to fit the pool -- it will float atop the water -- using a pair of sharp scissors. All edges should lie flush with the pool walls. Carefully mark where to cut, using a crayon or chalk, to prevent ruining the cover. If you have a curved pool, mark all curved sides and edges so you can cut the cover correctly.
- 4
Keep the solar cover on the pool whenever the pool is not in use to capture as much solar heat as possible.
- 5
When using the pool, roll the cover onto a reel to protect it from damage. Purchase a pool cover reel from a pool supply shop or online.

How to Use Solar to Heat Swimming Pools
Solar pool heating systems use the sun's rays for an efficient, cheaper way to heat your pool. For the most labor-intensive solar heating method, work with a contractor to install a solar pool heating system. These systems work by pumping water through a filter where it is heated by solar power before being channeled back into the pool in its heated state. For a cheaper, do-it-yourself option, install a solar pool cover.
