How to Use Transmission Fluid Safely

Transmission fluid is used in engines to prevent the gears from grinding together and keeps the transmission shifting smoothly. It is also used to optimize the performance of the engine. Transmission fluid is replaced and refilled in vehicles at regular intervals (approximately every 30,000 miles) and needs to be handled carefully. The fluid is toxic if ingested and it's also an environmental hazard when not disposed of properly. Follow safety precautions when handling this fluid.

Store transmission fluid on high shelves out of the reach of small children. If transmission fluid is accidentally ingested, call a poison control center immediately (see Resources).

Clean hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling transmission fluid. Use a scrub brush to clean under nails and to remove stuck-on fluid.

    • 3

Use a funnel to refill transmission fluid in a vehicle. This prevents the fluid from falling on the floor and seeping into the ground.

    • 4

Store used transmission fluid in a sealed plastic container that hasn't been used for any other liquids. A cleaned milk jug is a good example of a sealed container. Take the used fluid to a fluid recycling center to dispose of it safely. Most cities have a directory of centers that take dirty fluid. Many large chain auto stores also take and dispose of used transmission fluid.
