How to Wrap a Para Cord

Para cord, or parachute cord, is a small diameter multiple strand line with an inner core surrounded by a woven sheath of nylon. Originally designed to connect a parachute to the pack worn by an individual, para cord was developed to be strong and durable. Para cord has since been used in a variety of tasks and is often included in outdoor and survival gear. A popular means of carrying a length of cord is to wrap it around the handle of a tool or knife.

Place a knife or other sharp tool in a sheath or wrap with a rag to prevent potential injury. Hold the knife or tool so that the handle is easily accessible.

    • 2

Measure a short length of cord that is twice the length of the knife or tool handle. Place your thumb on the cord near the top of the handle where it joins the knife blade or tool. Pull the length of cord down past the bottom of the handle until two handle lengths are measured.

    • 3

Secure the cord in place at the top of the knife or tool handle with electrical tape. Position the short length of cord along the bottom or top edge of the handle and hold it in place.

    • 4

Wrap the long length of para cord around the handle and short length of cord. Begin wrapping at the top of the handle so that the electrical tape is covered. Work down the length of the handle making tight and concentric wraps.

Finish the cord wrapping by tying the long and short length of cord together with a Square or similar knot. Cut excess line from the knot with scissors.
