Information About Ticker Timers

Ticker timers, also known as ticker tape timers, are used to measure time intervals. These timers place "tick" marks at regular intervals on paper tape that is pulled through the timer by its machine.
  • Uses

    • Ticker timers are used in the science and financial industries. In science, the timer is used to measure small periods of time, while in the financial field, it is used to generate a report of stock exchange transactions during a day.

    Science

    • Ticker timers are able to record time intervals in relation to velocity, acceleration and deceleration. Time intervals are determined by comparing the amount of "tick" marks made against the amount of time elapsed as measured by a stopwatch. The faster the tape is pulled through the timer, the farther apart the "tick" marks will be.

    Stock Market

    • As of 2010, ticker tape timers used in the financial industry are computerized and only referred to as tickers. Before the advent of computerized ticker information, ticker timers produced reports on paper tape.
