Through the use of an interactive digital whiteboard, educators are able to examine topics in a new way. The Smartboard is a popular brand of digital interactive whiteboards for the classroom. This technology allows teachers and students to get close and interact through the use of a Smartboard and various applications. The Smartboard allows a user to create and download lessons in Smart Notebook software. The Smartboard can also be used in conjunction with Internet sites and other software.
Bugscope on the Smartboard

This lesson is ideal for upper elementary school students to high school-aged students. The teacher must sign up for a lesson with the Bugscope administrators ahead of time and send in samples of collected bugs. At the time of the session, the Smartboard user will be controlling the scanning electron microscope at University of Illinois; the teacher can control throughout the session or allow each student to take a turn. Through the use of a computer and the Smartboard, students will be able to observe an insect magnified in amazing detail. They can also chat with entomologists during the session.

Scholastic offers a great website designed for elementary students learning about insects; the site is designed for use with an interactive whiteboard. Through this site, students can create their own bugs using various insect body parts by dragging and dropping the parts on the Smartboard in the Monster Bugs activity. A specialized caterpillar can be built. Students can classify creatures as insects through the Zoom in on True Bugs activity.
