Light Bulbs That Ionize the Air

Despite the best efforts of home and business owners, some rooms pick up an odor over time. This is especially true with pets around. Although perfumes and air fresheners hide the smell, they don't actually eliminate it. Air ionizers do, by exposing the odor-causing molecules to a catalyst (usually titanium dioxide) that neutralizes them. A number of catalyst-coated compact fluorescent bulbs that serve as air ionizers and lights are on the market.

    Fresh2 Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

    • Fresh2 bulbs are coated with titanium dioxide, which releases oxidizers into the air that break down odors. To work best, place them in an uncovered light socket with plenty of airflow. As of November 2010, they were selling online for $19.99 for two bulbs, not including shipping and handling.

    OZONE Lite Ozone Light Bulbs

    • These light bulbs work in the same way as the Fresh2, by coating the bulb in titanium dioxide. They are available in standard, night light and full spectrum bulbs. As of November 2010, a standard bulb cost $38.95; a full spectrum for $45.95 and a night light for $19.65.

    Sunlife Full Spectrum Air Cleaner

    • These titanium-coated compact fluorescent bulbs are sold online through Aviva Health Solutions and you can buy them at specialty health stores in the United States and Canada. As of November 2010, they were selling for $29.99 per bulb.

    The Ionic Bulb

    • This bulb is the model commonly seen on TV infomercials. It functions in the same way as the others, using titanium dioxide to ionize odor. As of November 2010, it was selling online for $12.95 per bulb, plus $6.95 shipping and handling.
