A maintenance planner has to make sure that everything he needs is included in a work order package. A checklist is essential to ensure nothing is left out during your maintenance planning. Preventive maintenance involves repairing equipment or machines to replace parts that show wear. Instruction manuals usually provide instructions that can give you clues as to what you need to include on your checklist.

    Equipment

    • The life of a machine or asset can be significantly elongated by tightening screws, lubricating, cleaning and replacing wearing-out parts. Imagine what would happen if you did not service your vehicle---it definitely would not last. Maintenance ensures a machine or any type of asset is kept in good condition. But to accomplish that, you need to make sure a maintenance job is not duplicated, or does not interfere with another work order. On your checklist, note exactly where the work will be carried out and what kind of equipment you will need in order to completely carry out the maintenance task.

    Job Research

    • Before executing a maintenance order, you have to make sure the job description is accurate and professional with appropriate codes. Codes are assigned to show the levels of maintenance to use. Safety issues have to be taken into account as well. If the job involves working intermittently next to traffic, for example, you need cones and portable sign supports for traffic control while you are working to ensure the safety of the work operation. Obtain a safety permit ahead of time, if needed. If the work order requires regulatory permits or documentation, they have to be readily available.

    Environmental Issues

    • The environment has become a hot public policy issue in the United States and elsewhere in the world. Humans', animals' and plants' continued existence is dependent on a healthy environment. When conducting maintenance work, take into account the kind of impact it will have and how you can minimize the damage. For example, if the job requires disposing of a large amount of oil, make sure it is done according to regulations.

    Qualifications

    • When carrying out maintenance work, it is important to look at your ability to execute the job. For specialized work that is beyond your skills, seek assistance from a specialist.
