PDAs
-
PDAs, or personal digital assistants, are handheld devices that provide productivity features like a calendar, contact list, calculator and notepad. As of November 2010, PDAs have given way to smartphones. Smartphones offer all the same features as a PDA but also allow you to make phone calls and access the Internet.
Tablets
-
A tablet PC is a device that has all of its hardware components housed inside a flat touchscreen. All user input is done via stylus or fingertip. Tablet PCs are popular for their portable size and functionality. Many have the ability to connect to a cellular or wireless network, allowing you to browse the web or check your email. Tablets are also designed for handling different types of media, such as photos, music, videos and books.
Differences
-
When deciding between a tablet PC and a PDA or smartphone, analyze your needs. PDAs and smartphones are more convenient if you're always on the go because they offer pocket-sized convenience and connectivity. Smartphones are also capable of making phone calls, unlike most tablet PCs. However, tablet PCs offer almost all the same functionality as a PDA or smartphone, as well as a better media consumption experience, but are less portable.
