Peppermint Pattie History

A combination of creamy mint filling coated in crisp dark chocolate, Peppermint Patties have been around since before World War II. Originally produced in York, Pennsylvania, Peppermint Patties are no longer made in Pennsylvania or even the United States.
  • The York Cone Company

    • Henry C. Kessler created the Peppermint Pattie in the 1920s at the York Cone Company, wanting to outdo the gummy chocolate-covered peppermint candies on the market. He designed his candy to be firm and crisp. In 1940, the Peppermint Pattie made its debut in York. Soon after, Kessler's company stopped making ice cream cones, focusing on the production and distribution of its star candy all over the Northeast and Florida.

    Peter Paul

    • In 1972, Peter Paul acquired the York Cone Company and with it the rights to the York Peppermint Pattie. Peter Paul took the product national in 1975. In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury Schweppes.

    Hershey

    • Hershey acquired Cadbury Schweppes' U.S. confectionery license in 1988 and with it York Peppermint Patties. Hershey moved production to Reading, Pennsylvania. In 2009, Hershey closed the Reading plant and moved production of the candies to Monterrey, Mexico .
