Proper Mattress Care

Taking proper care of a mattress extends the life of the mattress and also helps you sleep better at night. Many companies also require customers to follow specific mattress care instructions in order to maintain valid warranties.
  • Protection

    • Protect your mattress by using a washable mattress pad. In addition, make sure your bed frame provides center support for your mattress. Bed frames without center support can cause mattress sagging.

    Cleaning

    • Vacuum mattresses when necessary. Never dry-clean mattresses or use harsh chemicals. If vacuuming doesn't remove stains or dirt, clean the stained area with small amounts of gentle soap and cold water and allow the mattress to dry completely. Never soak a mattress.

    Considerations

    • Don't jump on your mattress or allow children to play on it, since this can damage the interior construction of the mattress. Folding or bending your mattress can also cause damage.

    Warning

    • Don't cut off the sewn tags attached to your mattress, since this will usually void your warranty. However, cutting off tags is not illegal, according to The Better Sleep Council.
