      Polyvinyl chloride (or PVC) pipe is the most common pipe used in a wide variety of commercial, industrial and residential plumbing applications. It is classified into "schedules," with Schedule 40 PVC being thinner than Schedule 80 for any given pipe diameters. PVC 40 pipe is available in a variety of nominal pipe sizes, with each size having a specified outside diameter, minimum wall thickness, inside diameter and weight in pounds per foot.
