Slate Cleaning Products

    • Slate is a durable, natural stone that can be used for many surfaces around the home. To keep the slate clean, very little work is required aside from a regular cleaning of the slate surface. Mild products work best for this task, as bleach and strong chemical cleaners can quickly damage and discolor the slate.

    Water

    • Water is the best thing to use to clean slate, as it removes residue and uses no chemical ingredients. To use, simply run a cleaning rag or mop under warm water, wring out the mop or cloth, and wipe it over your slate surface. Let the slate air-dry.

    Dish Soap

    • Dish soap can be added to the water if you need more cleaning power. Mix a squirt of dish soap with a bucket of water, and dip your mop or cleaning rag into the mixture. Wring out the cleaning tool, and wipe it over the slate surface. Rinse out your cleaning tool, and wring it out once more. Wipe it over the slate to remove any leftover soap residue, and let the slate air-dry.

    Stone Cleaner

    • Using a stone cleaner labeled "safe for use on slate" provides a stronger cleaning routine that is still safe. Use the stone cleaner as directed on the label, which typically directs you to either spray on the solution or mix it with water. After using, wipe off the slate with a damp cloth or mop to remove any cleaner residue, and let the slate air-dry.
