Flowers don't have to be displayed in traditional vases FLOWER ARRANGEMENT image by brelsbil from Fotolia.com Flower arrangements can be given as gifts or built for personal display on tables or porches. Any arrangement of fresh flowers is likely to be beautiful. But if you're looking to create something unique, there are various things that you can do with your arrangement, depending on the season. You can order flowers online or purchase them from local florists. Use reputable florists, online and local, that are likely to have chosen the freshest flowers and cared for them appropriately.
Dried Flowers
-
Fresh flowers are not the only way to create flower arrangements. Try using dried flowers to create something unique. Purchase seasonally appropriate flowers and free-dry them or air dry them upside down, so the petals stand up. Place the flowers in a hard foam base, to help them stand up, and in a vase. Put larger flowers highest up, with smaller flowers toward the base.
You can also mix fresh and dried flowers for an even more unique look.
Spring Flowers
-
Flower arrangements are typically formed with fresh flowers. During the spring months, use flowers that bloom in the spring, like freesias, roses, peonies, tulips, sweet peas and cherry blossoms. Choose flowers that are light in color -- pink, lavender, white and yellow -- with large blossoms. Because these types of flowers generally have large blossoms, spring arrangements require shorter filler pieces, like sprigs of herbs or grass, to fill in the bases of the arrangements. Loose arrangements of these types of flowers are usually more appealing because they complement the light, airy presence of the flowers.
Try mixing together unusual types of flowers or using fillers like yellow pencils, ribbon or sticks to make your arrangement more unique.
Autumn Flowers
-
Flowers that bloom in the autumn include baby's breath, blackberry lilies, chrysanthemums, irises, junipers and lavender. Select flowers that are darker in color -- deep purple, maroon or blue -- with smaller blossoms, or a range from medium to small blossoms. To make your arrangement more unique, fill the arrangement in with reeds, cattails, pine cones, cinnamon sticks or unsheathed ears of corn.
Vases
-
Regardless of the season, you can use nontraditional containers for your flower arrangement. During the spring, try using vessels that complement the colors of the flowers, like old-fashioned glass milk quarts, coffee cans, glass lemonade pitchers or even a hollow log. During the autumn, try using pumpkins or other gourds, hollow pieces of wood or dark glass containers.
If your container isn't waterproof, put the flowers in a simple glass vase and place the vase inside the unique container.
