VW 1500 Engine Specifications

    • The Volkswagen 1500 is a compact four-seater sold by VW between 1961 and 1965, available in coupe, saloon and estate models. It featured a rear-mounted engine that was more powerful than the VW Beetle offered during the same time. Nearly 750,000 were produced over the 1500's production years. Its design went on to inspire the Karmen Ghia, a more powerful VW 1600 offered in the 1970s.

    Engine Design

    • The 1500's engine was designed for longitudinal mounting at the rear of its chassis. It featured four cylinders in an inline layout and had a single overhead cam with two valves per cylinder. The air-cooled engine had a displacement of 1,493 cc, lending the car's model name of the 1500.

    Power Specifications

    • The 1500's engine can produce a peak power level of 44 horsepower at 3,900 RPM. It generates 72.3 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 RPM. The car's overall power to weight ratio is 51.2 horsepower per ton, or 29.5 horsepower per liter. The engine is capable of powering the VW 1500 from 0 to 60 MPH in 20.8 seconds and to a top speed of 87 MPH.

    Engine and Drivetrain Specifications

    • From the factory, a four-speed manual gearbox was mated to the 1500's engine which had a final drive ratio of 4.13:1, controlling power distribution to the 1500's two rear wheels. The engine had a compression ratio of 7.2:1 and was naturally aspirated with no catalytic converter integrated into the exhaust system.
