What Is the Purpose of AAA?

Founded in 1902, the American Automobile Association (AAA) is a membership organization that provides auto care services and discounts to its members. Each state has its own affiliate of AAA. Members pay an annual fee for which they receive emergency roadside assistance; recommendations and discounts on various automotive, dining and hotel services; and help making travel plans.
  • Car Assistance

    • If an AAA member's car breaks down or needs a quick repair, such as a flat tire, he can call the AAA hotline, which will in turn dispatch a local AAA car repairman to repair the car onsite or tow it to a nearby auto shop.

    Recommendations

    • AAA provides its seal of approval to various auto repair shops, hotels, car rental services and even restaurants. If you are in search of a recommendation for one of these services, you may telephone the AAA hotline, which will provide you with contact information. Some stores place the AAA sticker on their windows or brochures to indicate AAA approval.

    Discounts

    • As a benefit to its members, AAA teams up with local companies to offer discounts on services, like hotels and car rentals, to AAA members.

    Travel

    • Local AAA offices assist people with travel plans. AAA travel agents can help you plan your trip by booking airline tickets and accommodations for you and by providing information on travel destinations worldwide.
